Joan Strauman’s remarkable story is testimony to the benefits of a positive attitude, determination, and strength of body, mind, and spirit. Joan’s life has always included a strong spiritual practice, intellectual stimulation, a desire to learn and grow, physical movement and dance, plus a joyful and supportive social network. Intuitively she chose this path many years ago. These attributes are the core elements of Masterpiece Living and successful aging.

Joan established herself in a successful career as a school librarian. At age 35 she made a childhood dream a reality by enrolling in dance lessons. Dancing blossomed into a steady stream of musical and drama performances. After retiring as a librarian, she received her degree in Theatre from the University of South Florida.

Nine years ago, Joan enrolled in a Creative Writing class at the Life Enrichment Center in Tampa. She discovered the Forever Moving dance group and has been an active member ever since. Executive Director, Roma Metcalf, remarked, “Joan is multi-talented and truly exceptional. She works hard and is strong-willed.”

Four years ago at age 70, Joan was enjoying an active life in her church, classes, dance, performances, and was surrounded by a strong social network. Seemingly from nowhere, Joan suffered a severe and devastating stroke. Even though doctors doubted her chances, Joan was committed to rebuilding her life. Her fierce determination and a faithful social network supported her through extensive rehabilitation.

Joan had always envisioned herself in a supportive community and after two years in rehab, she was ready to move forward. With the assistance of her dear friend who was her power of attorney, Joan visited several area communities. It was an easy decision – University Village immediately felt like home. Synchronicity prevailed and Joan’s house sold in a mere two days.

University Village’s expertise and experience with Masterpiece Living was exactly the philosophy and support system that Joan was looking for. She eagerly met with Shana Sons, University Village’s Masterpiece Living Coordinator, and took the three lifestyle inventories. Joan followed Shana’s guidance and continued to make remarkable improvements.  She has signed up for every class and workshop that Shana has offered including Neurobics, a Complaint Free World, and was a conversation starter for Shana’s table talk topics.

Joan lives independently at University Village and attends Shape-Up, Advanced Shape-Up, Tai Chi, Yoga, and Line Dancing. She is an inspirational participant in University Village’s Time Tapestries class – a writing and acting group through the Patel Conservatory.

Joan transformed her body from bedridden to transitioning to mobility with a walker. Next she began navigating with a cane, and she now walks freely on her own. She dances weekly with Forever Moving. She proudly announced, “Once again, I can perform a double pirouette!” Joan and the Forever Moving group will be performing mid-May in a special production with their sister professional dance group and children from Orange Grove Magnet School.

This remarkable woman has overcome major obstacles and surprised everyone except herself. She maintained her steadfast positive attitude and kept a clear vision of regaining full function. Her achievements were acknowledged earlier this year by the West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging, Inc. (WCFAAA) and she was awarded the Salt & Pepper Award in the category of Health and Wellness.

No one could be more deserving that this woman who continues to inspire everyone around her. A fellow resident at University Village recently remarked to Joan at the weekly Bistro event, “It is a blessing to watch you dance.”
