University Village hosted a spring Casino Day in April. Casino games at a retirement community? Yes, it is an afternoon to interact and share the excitement of playing with fellow residents. The auditorium was transformed to the Flamingo Hotel and residents were each given a bag of white, red and blue chips. That’s right – no money involved, just heaps of fun and excitement.
The afternoon event was designed for residents to have a good time, share an afternoon with fellow residents and staff, perhaps meet some new friends, and spend a few hours experiencing the thrill of playing without the risk of using real money. For some the games of Blackjack, Roulette, and Craps were familiar, and for others it was a brand new experience. Everyone was invited to come play, learn and have an enjoyable afternoon.
The event is coordinated by Kathy Burkholder, Director of Accounting, and dealer extraordinaire of the craps table. The creation of the Flamingo Hotel was a transformation by Miriam Alvarado, Director of Housekeeping, and her staff. Casino Day was a team effort made possible by University Village staff that graciously played the roles as dealers and wait staff. Light beverages and hors d’oeuvres were served. The Flamingo Hotel floor host was none other than University Village’s Executive Director, Tim Parker.
Residents converted their winning chips into tickets for the drawings at the conclusion of the afternoon. Tickets could be put in the baskets of twenty different prizes ranging from gift cards, to services, to a private banquet meal by Chef Fred for a party of four!
